Motivation and Determination

Motivation and determination are often used interchangeably, but there are some key differences between the two:

Motivation:

Source: External or internal. It can come from factors like rewards, recognition, inspiration, or simply the enjoyment of the activity itself.

Feeling: More emotional and fleeting. It can be like a spark that ignites action but can fizzle out quickly.

Focus: Goal-oriented, but the “why” behind the goal might not be fully explored.

Sustainability: Can be more dependent on external factors and prone to fading with challenges or obstacles.

Determination:

Source: Primarily internal. It comes from a deep-rooted desire, commitment, or belief in the importance of achieving a goal.

Feeling: More resolute and persistent. It’s a steady force that drives you forward even when faced with difficulties.

Focus: Not just on the goal, but also on the “why” and the values it represents. This deeper understanding provides intrinsic motivation.

Sustainability: More resilient and less likely to be swayed by external factors. It fosters grit and perseverance through challenges.

Here’s an analogy:

Motivation is like a match. It can light a fire and get you started, but it needs to be constantly rekindled to keep the fire burning.

Determination is like a burning ember. It provides a sustained, inner heat that keeps you going even when the initial spark fades.

Ultimately, both motivation and determination are important for success in life. However, developing stronger determination can lead to greater persistence and overall success in achieving your goals.

PS: But at what physical and mental price?
